Contract Research

The Department of NeuroFarBa carries out significant research activities, including international research, in both clinical and preclinical fields, in collaboration with the Careggi and Meyer University Hospitals. The Department benefits from national and international public funding, as well as private funding. In order to further strengthen this important activity, the Department is interested in accepting donations from public and private entities aimed at supporting and advancing the Department’s various research lines.

At its meeting on March 20, 2017, the NeuroFarBa Department Council approved the following "Code of Self-Regulation", compliance with which is mandatory for professors and researchers affiliated with the Department, as well as for donors. By using the forms provided below, donors formally commit to complying with the aforementioned Code.

Use of 3D technology in ophthalmic surgery

The aim of the project is to investigate the advantages and limitations of current 3D visualization systems in ophthalmic surgical procedures involving both the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. In particular, several aspects deserve further investigation:
- The study of retinal phototoxicity in both anterior and posterior segment surgery using theoretical and applied models. Conventional microscope visualization will be compared with 3D system visualization.
- The use of 3D digital images offers significant opportunities to improve visualization of the surgical field during procedures; therefore, the study of digital filters to enhance visualization of intraocular structures during surgery deserves further investigation.
- The 3D system employs a high dynamic range camera directly connected to the surgical microscope, which transmits superimposed images to a display screen. The possibility of integrating not only surgical parameters (infusion pressure, proportional vacuum, cutting speed, etc.) but also advanced imaging techniques useful during surgery (such as intraoperative optical coherence tomography) into the same display will be investigated. The ability for surgeons to monitor these functions within their visual field may improve surgical safety and effectiveness.
- The ergonomics of 3D visualization have not yet achieved fully satisfactory efficiency levels. Many systems currently in use present limitations related to the positioning of the surgeon, surgical team, and 3D display. Possible ergonomic improvements to facilitate surgery under optimal conditions will be studied.
- Evaluation of the 3D system in surgical education, both as a teaching aid in university settings and in training courses for already specialized surgeons.
The project will last one year.

OPALE Project – Observatory on Perinatal Loss

During the COVID-19 pandemic, pregnancy and childbirth were particularly challenging experiences for Italian women, especially during the first months. The PeaRL Joint Perinatal Research Laboratory of the NeuroFarBa Department, coordinated by Prof. Alfredo Vannacci, proposes the OPALE project to evaluate the psychological impact of the pandemic, restrictions, and healthcare received on the mental well-being of women during pregnancy and postpartum in cases of perinatal loss. OPALE integrates and continues the activities of the national COVID-ASSESS project and the international COCOON project (Italian branch), into which they converge.
In particular, this observatory aims to deepen the assessment of the specific consequences of the pandemic in cases of perinatal loss (miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death). The project falls within the field of perinatal clinical epidemiology activities conducted by the PeaRL Laboratory, with particular reference to prevention, treatment, and surveillance related to drug use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Pending general University guidelines, we propose the following form for those interested in contributing to our research. Following receipt of this communication, the Department will send a declaration of acceptance together with an extract of the Department Council resolution approving the contribution. After the donation has been made, the Department will also provide feedback on the actual use of the contribution, in accordance with the decisions made exclusively by the scientific coordinator and in compliance with the purposes for which the contribution was provided.
